TOWNHOME COMMUNITIESSTREET AND CLUSTER
Equipped with a 5 acre block of land and an objective to build at a ratio of 12 or more units per acre, many builders created small condominium townhome communities like these across Ontario. The plans are straight forward, providing grade related dwellings with a front and rear yard, places to park and with easy access for a variety of municipal and private services. The higher densities usually translated into affordability for entry level home buyers. As often as many creative attempts to masterplan small communities with innovative dwelling typologies have tried and succeeded nothing can compare to this staple of the homebuilding industry. As designers we tried to put a spin on each project, to give it a different face and style while responding to the urban and landscape context and the attendant obstacles to development. Usually all it took was the application of tasteful, simple and economical building materials arranged with balance, proportion and restraint. Illustrated here is a small photographic essay from our townhome saga.
