Despite the recent trends toward urban and regional densification and imposed limits on sprawl, the single detached dwelling is still the preferred type of residence for the majority of North Americans. Over the last few decades, despite the plight in some housing markets, many have achieved the dream of owning this type of home through inter alia, economical market driven development and construction processes that deliver what people need and want. These builder vernacular dwellings are attractive, durable and affordable and, if designed and built using smart growth type principles, will remain a standard model for accommodating future populations. A few examples of our work in this important sector over the years are illustrated here.
